League Championship
The tie went to a replay and The Whites won 2–1. Atlético, however, gained some revenge when, led by former Real Madrid coach José Villalonga, it defeated The Whites in two successive Copa del Generalísimo finals in 1960 and 1961. Between 1961 and 1989, when Real dominated La Liga, only Atlético offered it any serious challenge, winning Liga titles in 1966, 1970, 1973 and 1977.
In 1965, Atlético became the first team to beat Real at the Bernabéu in eight years. Real Madrid's record against Atlético in more recent times is very favorable. A high point coming in the 2002–03 season, when The Whites clinched the La Liga title after draw at Atlético 0-0 at the Vicente Calderón Stadium.

Ronaldo & Kaka
Laura Navas (Lyon, France) / Translation by Michael J. O'Donnell
Ronaldo and Kaka are optimistic with the team's chances of reaching the next round.
Cristiano Ronaldo
"Everything is possible in football. We lost, but we can do what they did tonight in Madrid. I'm calm and confident in our chances."
"Real Madrid have to think about winning at home. You suffer in this championship, but I'm sure we'll respond well in the return leg and win."
"The Bernabeu will help us. We will have to be in optimum form throughout the clash and be ambitious. This is far from over. We have to prove we can reach the next round at home."
Kaka
"We know we will suffer, but we are used to playing important games. Real Madrid are ready to make it. That is our goal."
"We must now think of La Liga. We'll focus on the Champions League again in two weeks. We can turn the score around in the return leg."

Eurosport - Champions League – Puel plays down Ronaldo threat
The Portuguese forward looked in ominous form on Saturday on his return from a two-match La Liga suspension, netting twice as Real crushed bottom club Xerez 3-0, but Puel told Spain's Marca sports daily they would not be marking him man-to-man in the last-16 first-leg clash at the Stade de Gerland.
"We cannot just focus on Ronaldo as there are other players who can make the difference," he said, listing Brazilian playmaker Kaka, former Lyon striker Karim Benzema and Argentina forward Gonzalo Higuain as significant potential threats.
"There is so much potential that I don't believe that one player will make the difference."
Lyon defeated Real on the last two occasions the clubs met in France, although Manuel Pellegrini's side are unbeaten away in this season's Champions League and invested around 250 million euros (£217m) in players in the close season.
They are seeking a first quarter-final place since 2003/04 and this year's competition has a special edge for the nine-times European champions as May's final is at their Bernabeu stadium.
Benzema had been a doubt after picking up a muscle problem, but Real said on their website the 22-year-old France international had been included in the squad to face the club he played at from 2005-2009.
"It was important for him to leave Lyon and continue his development," Puel told Marca.
"He has arrived at one of the great clubs with a lot of individual talents and he has to fight for a place in the team."
Lyon have struggled this season, going out of both the French Cup and the League Cup, and ended 2009 in sixth place in Ligue 1, 13 points adrift of Bordeaux who pipped them to the title last season.
They are back up to fourth after Saturday's 1-0 home win over Racing Lens.
"We are not playing brilliant football but we have improved," Puel said. "We need to be more competitive, above all against Madrid.
"It's a very important match because we have always got to the last 16 and we are one of the most consistent teams in Europe but we need to grow and get further in the competition - it's our great goal."

Stadiams
After some successes, the 1943 elected president Santiago Bernabéu decided that the Estadio Chamartín was not big enough for the ambitions of the club. A new stadium was built and was inaugurated on 14 December 1947. This was the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium as it is known today, although it did not acquire this name until 1955. The first match held on Bernabéu was played between Real Madrid and the Portuguese club Belenenses and won by The Whites with 3–1, the first goal being scored by Sabino Barinaga.

Colors
Real's traditional away colours are all black or all purple. The club's kit is currently manufactured by Adidas whose contract extends from 1998.[29][30] Real Madrid's first shirt sponsor, Zanussi, agreed for the 1982–83, 1983–84 and 1984–85 seasons. Following that, the club was sponsored by Parmalat and Otaysa before a long-term deal was signed with Teka in 1992. In 2001, Real Madrid ended their contract with Teka and for one season used the Realmadrid.com logo to promote the club's website.

Then, in 2002, a deal was signed with Siemens Mobile and in 2006, the BenQ Siemens logo appeared on the club's shirt. Real Madrid's current shirt sponsor is bwin.com following the economic problems of BenQ Siemens. A table showing which company was Real Madrid's kit manufacturer and which company's logo appeared on the face of those shirts as the shirt partner during what time period is shown below (note: first year noted in period column represents the playing season that started in that year, while last year noted represents the end of that year's season. For example, "period 1985-1992" represents seasons '85-'86 through '91-'92).

Crests
At that time, King Alfonso XIII granted the club his royal patronage which came in the form of the title "Real madrid ", roughly translated as "Royal".Thus, Alfonso's crown was added to the crest and the club styled itself Real Madrid Club de Fútbol. the dissolution of the monarchy in 1931, all the royal symbols (the crown on the crest and the title of Real) were eliminated. The crown was replaced by the dark mulberry band of the Region of Castile.

In 1941, two years after the end of the Civil War, the crest's "Real Corona", or "Royal Crown", was restored while the mulberry stripe of Castile was retained as well. In addition, the whole crest was made full color, with gold being the most prominent, and the club was again called Real Madrid Club de Fútbol. The most recent modification to the crest occurred in 2001 when the club wanted to better situate itself for the twenty-first century and further standardize its crest. One of the modifications made was changing the mulberry stripe to a more bluish shade.
