Ramón Calderón

Calderon was elected President of Real in 2 July 2006, winning the elections with 8,344 votes whilst Juan Palacios was second with 8,098. After discussions with his football director, Predrag Mijatovic, Calderon hired Fabio Capello as club manager, after initially considering Bernd Schuster, the manager of Getafe.

Amongst his promises when running for election was the signing of Arjen Robben from Chelsea, Cesc Fàbregas from Arsenal and Kaká from AC Milan. Calderón fended off allegations of making illegal approach from the clubs in question. He was only successful with Robben.

On 19 July 2006 he announced his first two signings, Fabio Cannavaro and Emerson; both signed from newly demoted Juventus for an estimated €20 million.

El Derbi madrileño

The club's nearest neighbour is Atlético Madrid, a rivality feeling is shared between fans of both football teams. Although Atlético was originally founded by three Basque students in 1903, it was joined in 1904 by dissident members of Madrid FC. Further tensions came because initially Real supporters came from the middle class while the Atlético supporters were drawn from the working class.

Today these distinctions are largely blurred. They met for the first time on 21 February 1929 in matchday three of the first League Championship at the former Chamartín. It was the first official derby of the new tournament, and Real won 2–1. rivalry first gained international attention in 1959 during the European Cup when the two clubs met in the semi-final. Real won the first leg 2–1 at the Bernabéu while Atlético won 1–0 at the Metropolitano. The tie went to a replay and The Whites won 2–1. Atlético, however, gained some revenge when, led by former Real Madrid coach José Villalonga, it defeated The Whites in two successive Copa del Generalísimo finals in 1960 and 1961.

In 1965, Atlético became the first team to beat Real at the Bernabéu in eight years. Real Madrid's record against Atlético in more recent times is very favorable. A high point coming in the 2002–03 season, when The Whites clinched the La Liga title after draw at Atlético 0-0 at the Vicente Calderón Stadium.

Ronaldo & Kaka

"We are calm and confident because we know we can make a comeback"

Laura Navas (Lyon, France) / Translation by Michael J. O'Donnell

Ronaldo and Kaka are optimistic with the team's chances of reaching the next round.

Cristiano Ronaldo
"Everything is possible in football. We lost, but we can do what they did tonight in Madrid. I'm calm and confident in our chances."

"Real Madrid have to think about winning at home. You suffer in this championship, but I'm sure we'll respond well in the return leg and win."

"The Bernabeu will help us. We will have to be in optimum form throughout the clash and be ambitious. This is far from over. We have to prove we can reach the next round at home."

Kaka
"We know we will suffer, but we are used to playing important games. Real Madrid are ready to make it. That is our goal."

"We must now think of La Liga. We'll focus on the Champions League again in two weeks. We can turn the score around in the return leg."

Eurosport - Champions League – Puel plays down Ronaldo threat

The Portuguese forward looked in ominous form on Saturday on his return from a two-match La Liga suspension, netting twice as Real crushed bottom club Xerez 3-0, but Puel told Spain's Marca sports daily they would not be marking him man-to-man in the last-16 first-leg clash at the Stade de Gerland.

"We cannot just focus on Ronaldo as there are other players who can make the difference," he said, listing Brazilian playmaker Kaka, former Lyon striker Karim Benzema and Argentina forward Gonzalo Higuain as significant potential threats.

"There is so much potential that I don't believe that one player will make the difference."

Lyon defeated Real on the last two occasions the clubs met in France, although Manuel Pellegrini's side are unbeaten away in this season's Champions League and invested around 250 million euros (£217m) in players in the close season.

They are seeking a first quarter-final place since 2003/04 and this year's competition has a special edge for the nine-times European champions as May's final is at their Bernabeu stadium.

Benzema had been a doubt after picking up a muscle problem, but Real said on their website the 22-year-old France international had been included in the squad to face the club he played at from 2005-2009.

"It was important for him to leave Lyon and continue his development," Puel told Marca.

"He has arrived at one of the great clubs with a lot of individual talents and he has to fight for a place in the team."

Lyon have struggled this season, going out of both the French Cup and the League Cup, and ended 2009 in sixth place in Ligue 1, 13 points adrift of Bordeaux who pipped them to the title last season.

They are back up to fourth after Saturday's 1-0 home win over Racing Lens.

"We are not playing brilliant football but we have improved," Puel said. "We need to be more competitive, above all against Madrid.

"It's a very important match because we have always got to the last 16 and we are one of the most consistent teams in Europe but we need to grow and get further in the competition - it's our great goal."
